I was out in the wonderful Vale of Glamorgan last week when I was stunned to turn this up completely out of the blue.

As many will know, Anglo-Saxon coins are very rare finds in Wales. I think I have seen two in the 14 years I have been detecting, and this is my first ever coin from this era.

The coin is an Aethelred II small cross penny and dates AD 978-79. The obverse inscription reads + ÆÐELRED REX ANGL.ER, which is unusual and possibly not previously recorded.

The reverse reads + ÆÐELVEARD MONA, so the moneyer is definitely Æthelweard, although it is not yet clear what mint this was struck at.

Museum experts are trying to work out for definite whether the coin's unusual features make it unique.

I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming, but it still seems to be there and I think I'm awake...

A true beauty, nothing more to add really apart from well done on the find. You must be chuffed to bits.

One thing is for sure, it knocks a gold coin into a cocked hat. I might consider a swop for my axe head if someone hadn't already snaffled it  Wink

Fantastic coin, well found.

There's been a couple of anglosaxon from club land in the past - they were the only ones known of their type too.

Fantastic find though Smiley - shows what is still out there!

Back of the Net Peter - well done sir.

I hope it turns out to be a new variant.

Well found
