I've heard a hoard of 200 Denari and a rare heavy lead pig was found on a rally/ dig today in Somerset ? Any info guys.. Smiley

There were 2 hoards found. The denari were placed in the hole above stones (?) and what seems to be human remains. The lead ingot was over 2 feet long so I have been informed. Not sure what the second hoard was. There was also a gold posey ring found. The rally was in Wells. I have a better picture of the ingot but can't get to post it for some reason.

The second hoard was of bronze Roman coins.

Excellent find, the lead ingot is a bit special and and a rare find especially that weight. Thanks for information....hope they cleared it all and left nothing for detectorists of the night.  Wink

Great find though I'd have been over the Moon with the lead on it's own.

Totally agree wittsy Denari are common finds even hoards in comparison to the lead pig. Much more interesting, I take it they were all found in very close proximity??

The lead pig is breathtaking, what a great inscription.

What are the thoughts on whether this falls as Treasure? Lead is not a precious metal, and it's not a hoard as it's a single item.

It clearly is a treasure in my eyes and as Indy would say "It belongs in a museum!"


Oh, and the denarii weren't bad either!

If it's classed as an artefact wouldn't that make a difference ? It is pretty unique and I would be surprised if more than one Museum would love it in thier Roman collection.

Could be a bit disappointing for the finder though if he looses it and only gets scrap value in return. I'd be gutted.

Wittsy that is fascinating. I did a bit of digging into a local farm/field name. It seemed foreign to me and, of course, my imagination ran riot.
Turned out I might not have been far off the mark. I thought it might be Roman and I knew they granted retired military a parcel of land. This might well reflect in a name for the area.
As far as I could find the name was Armenian.  Hey go figure  Roll Eyes

On its own I guess the lead pig wouldn't qualify under the treasure act, however clearly the Denari and Bronze hoards will be and if the pig was found close by it could be associated with the hoard deposit also chuck the possible buarial.....any one no how close they were all found to each other. Wink
