Your collection must be looking a bit impressive by now Dale.  My 2 sit in regal isolation on a page of their own.  Roll Eyes
Onwards and upwards, next time maybe No.3 will show up.

Cheers Paul Wink

The first coin is the Bristol/Coventry provincial mint mule I spoke to you about, note the B on breast for Bristol, with CIVI TAS COVE TRE on the REV..... im struggling to find anything out about mules like this, there just so rare, one Bristol/Coventry is recorded by Blunt and Whitton but where it is I don't know, this coin could be from the same dies?

The 2nd coin is a known example of a Bristol/London mule, my mate has a example in his collection from the same dies, what he picked up 20 years ago from a auction Wink

Ebay seems to be quite good a Bristol coins at the moment - although I must admit that I don't bother looking at BIN coins very often - I don't have the time.

I did pick up this H8 Bristol groat - this one was an auction, but it went for far less than the BIN H8 Bristol groat still on eBay.

Well, it's possibly a long story but...

I started off collecting roman - and I still do, although I'm mainly concentrating on people I haven't got and late roman and byzantine silver (siliqua, miliarense, hexagrams, etc).

I also collect hammered, but that's mainly groats, and above and Irish coins, but this collection waxes and wanes!

And I also collect the 1811,1812 silver token series (it started because the York coins have 'Cattle & Barber' on them and at the time I was going out with a Miss Barber and my sister was going out with a Mr Cattle)

Finally I also collect roman provincial silver - I've always liked the coins, but I've got a special focus on it this year (like the silver provincial coins last year) because I'm giving a talk on them to the South Wales & Mon Numismatic Soc (meets 1st Monday of the Month in Newport) later in the year.

And then there is whatever takes my fancy! (so I've a few 18th century crowns, some greek, that sort of stuff). I sold a lot of my coins (~1000 roman silvers) a few years back to help moving house, so I've been building my collection up again. I admit that your Bristol collection has certainly inspired me to have more of a look at Bristol coins too Smiley

A bit of everything then Roland!!  Cheesy
I also like collecting the groats, Bristol was actually authorised to mint coins for Ireland, they have the WS monogram on like your groat above, theres one for sale here

http://www.leodishammeredcoins.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&cPath=27&products_id=400

I have a example but the one shown is better than mine, but im not ready to pay that to upgrade Roll Eyes

Your groat is from one of Giles Evenet dies cut in Bristol, you can tell this from the pellet beneath the 3rd quarter of the shield Wink

Nice to see someone collecting coins from their locality. I've got a few copper tokens from N. Wales that I've found and a Flintshire bank  shilling and  a sixpence that I bought quite cheaply. Still waiting for a Rhuddlan mint short cross, there's got to be one somewhere for me to find ! Well done  Dale, you're a shrewd collector Wink Wink Wink

That's interesting - I hadn't really noticed that - it's often difficult to work out what is meant and what isn't (i.e die rust or the engraver having a bad day). I don't have any books specifically on the Bristol mint - and the books I do have are currently in boxes as we are decorating the lounge! - but it all adds to the knowledge Smiley

As with many people, I can't just look at any coins I buy with a 'I must have that' (although there are a few) - I always have to look at the value if / when I have to sell them too - there are some very nice coins out there, but with some, let's say, heavy prices. I still feel slightly annoyed about the Chas I half pound I bought 5 years ago - I negotiated a 20% discount, but I still couldn't sell it and get my money back - it's one I'm just going to have to keep in the back of a cupboard for another 40 years or so.

But then - what price is a coin? I bought a Procopius siliqua from eBay (found in Gloucester) for £190 - and in the great sell off sold it to a dealer for £400 - they then sold it to another dealer, who has it listed on eBay for £895.......

I think we enjoy identifying the coins anyway Smiley - I also came at this hobby from collecting, I want to know what I've found - I've certainly learned a lot about artefacts, from other people and from looking up the info on the Net or in books - it's letting yourself get really into a subject I suppose and there's always more to learn - just this month I spent two days (off and on) trying to identify a token / coin I found in Pontyclun and finally nailed it down to a 1880/81 Melbourne Exhibition token - now I know for next time Cheesy
