we all detect in the fields but if there is a wood on the land do you go into it !, i remember detecting down by ST FAGANS a few years back when i was on a Cardiff scan rally found nothing on the pasture but i did go into a old wood and found 2 hammered coins withing 10 minutes of each other , maybe luck at the time  Grin, but its always worth a visit to the woods for sure. i have been into the woods nr st fagans and found loads of pre dec, and silver in the past,  a mate found a gold noble just up the road from there.

i find most woods on farm land though are full of shotgun cartridges,  dohhh and not much else.
but woods on public land can be good.

there's an old wood on one of my local farms i go to.
I had a nice siganal right at the base of a tree, dug down,
and up came two lovely hammerd coins of edward 3, i kept one and gave one to the farmer he was over the moon. So yes its always worth doing old woods

I have tried several woods near to where I live (In Barry) but never have found anything interesting, although I know people who have a long time ago.  I usually try there when my regular land is under crop and I have no where else to go, so I might try it again sometime this week.

Good post that kev, I am reluctant to go in the woods around here because there are so many shotgun cases from the pheasant shooting that goes on, but I do know of one in mid wales that was full of Roman finds.
