Hi folks,
And so its my turn, got my first hammered coin a couple of weeks back and have been trying to identify it, and struggling badly. I have a copy of the spinks book and confused by the 'x' marks on the long cross side, at the end of civitas x and london x, and the crosses above these also, which i cannot match to. The closest ive come is spinks 1759, but then the bust doesnt seem to match my coin.
Can anyone help please?
Oh and found it on pasture land with the trusty ace250 and nel tornado

The diameter is 23mm
How can we tell it may be an annulet issue?
On neither of the coins mentioned can i get an exact match, especially on the crosses after london and civitas, what do these mean? Are these significant?

Well, it's definitely a Henry - you can read that - plus the mint / privy mark is pierced cross, which Edward III (of whom I have quite a few groats) didn't have.

The crosses you mention are called saltaires - and are used as 'stops' between parts of the legend - you get these on a lot of hammereds - if you have a copy of Spink / Seaby Coins of England  your type is no. 1839 - saltaire stops with annulets in two quarters of the reverse - it looks like the 1/2 groats only have single stops rather than the double stops of the groat.
