I came across this on ebay and wanted to know if it is a forgery, it seems that way as I have never seen writing under the bust, see the listing, I've seen WRL stamped on coins but nothing quite like that, whats your thoughts?

Yes, it's a fake - like most if not all of his other offerings.

To me the writing looks like 'Sou' from 'Souvenir' - the obverse - in terms of style isn't bad, but the reverse is atrocious.

He's also got another identical one - and as you said there shouldn't be writing (at least like that) under the bust.

Many of his coins are quite worn - making it harder - especially with the size of the images, even after magnification to make a '100%' either way - quite deliberately I would imagine.

But, given that the Nero he is selling is quite an obvious (and I think quite often sold) fake, and then there are several of the Vespasians which look quite cast, and then this strange coin (with a twin), then would say that they know what they are doing in offering less than legitimate coins......

Don't touch it.

Thank you Smiley

The general advice (from the Coin Forgery Discussion List) is that if you suspect a coin - have a look at their other offerings - you can expect the odd fake off even reputable people, but if they are selling a whole bunch of them, you can be sure yours is as well, even if you are not 100% sure.

There seem to be a particularly high percentage of fakes on ebay at the moment - perhaps they are trying to raise money for something....
