Only had about an hour on a Roman site that had previously been dug by archeologists, found this in the soil site they left behind, first glance I thought part of scissors but there is no hole for another piece to join, don't think its Roman but wondering if its an old nail or something along those lines.

Well Geoff if anyone on here should know what a hinge looks like it's me.  Fitted enough of them, gates and stable doors alike. Only difference between them is mine are galvanised  Grin

Wouldn't a gate hinge be rounded though Val, this is a flat piece of square bar, would have thought a gate hinge would round off with the opening and closing on a gate or is the pin stationary?

Square is good, the years will have corroded a lot off the original length but the shape is the same and the square piece would have either been set in to a stone wall (with lead) or hammered into a wooden beam (door frame) and worked in a reverse way to the one below so the door hung in it rather than on it Wink

Just for you valleyboy, I went out in the rain. I think these will show you more clearly what Geoff was saying.  There are actually 2 fittings,  you could call them  Male and Female (I'll leave you to figure out which is which)  Wink
Modern ones are adjustable.
The bolts just screw in to lift the gate, handy in this weather because the posts, even brick ones tend to move when the ground gets wet.
