Any ideas ? found on local beach whilst ringpull fishing ...I thought it looks like a big snail its solid like stone though

It's a fossil, possibly a piece of ammonite.

They died out at the same time and for the same (supposed) reason as the dinosaurs so it's at least 66 million years old but they go way back to 350 million years Huh

wow that's mind boggling I know it was an accidental eyes only find but it still gives me a buzz thinking how old it is I can't even imagine that many years I'm made up ha ha even if it doesn't give a signal  Grin

it's the first time I've ever found anything like that meself it just stud out on the beach as for the days detecting it was a disaster two 5p pieces few bits of  lead and aluminium and a total drenching . oh and I'm as bad at chess as I am detecting ha ha  Grin

Yes it is an ammonite, I used to find them on the beaches in North Yorkshire where I lived as a kid.
