Detecting Wales Rally 89 – The Lavender wearing Santas

An early 6.30am start saw Mike pick me up from Cardiff, having thoroughly scared my young boy with his ever expanding hair! The car was loaded, petrol and sarnies acquired and we were on our way in the pitch black chasing a golden sun rise.

Not sure about everyone else, but we managed to hit a diversion about 10km from the farm, which try as we might we couldn’t fathom a way around it so it knocked our arrival time slightly, but we were still on site for 8am to meet the farmer and his good lady.

Thanks once again go to Chef for donating this farm to Detecting Wales to hold the Santa Hats rally. It was very much appreciated by all concerned mate. We had a mixture of stubble, freshly sown pasture and a little too long pasture to play with today.

Our standard fill your holes, take your rubbish home, go here and go there routine was complemented by a Santa Hats photo that unfortunately was on the wrong setting so it’s not up  to much. On that note I must apologise for the general poor quality of the photographs. Two of my cameras have passed away this year and gone to ’Lens Heaven’ so unfortunately I was left with the wife’s one this morning which isn’t really suitable for the job.

The first find of note was a Roman Follis that was in a corker of condition and came from the furthest stubble field. Not long after this I got to see a dolphin brooch which had been lost via its snapped pin and plate and a further two more Romanus Grottus. It looked like it was going to be a Roman heavy day. Alas however as the day ticked away all we got to see was more grots, a small amount of a broken trumpet brooch and a potential Roman key found by our Frenchman. The Romans were certainly here as is well documented but the rest of their losses will need to wait for another day.

On the Medieval front the hammered coinage that turned up represented quite a time frame but were all a tad battered to say the least, with the highest count for an individual detectorist being three. There was also the unusual find of half of a medieval mirror case that at the time I couldn’t place but the finder duly did his research and was spot on. Well done.

One of the nicer artefacts was a barrel tap without the actual barrel and sprinkler bit. So I suppose in other words a tap. It looks like it would clean up pretty decently. I have one on display in my home and visitors often enquire about it.

Amongst other finds Mike found a heart shaped item that I think Nobby was on the money with as a hair brooch that sat on a Victorian ladies bun. There is an argument that says Mike could still wear it today, but we won’t go there.

Three o’clock saw the start of the raffle with tokens being swapped for raffle tickets. Huge thanks go to Nobby and Justin for not just bringing the raffle tables but also expertly hosting the raffle. It was sort of like watching an older and muddier version of Ant & Dec!

It was as ever an eclectic pile of raffle prizes including everything from books to chocolates to lavender body wash, which amongst 40 strong mainly male detectorists was one of the last prizes to be claimed. I think its safe to say that this has since been wrapped and now is resting under a tree somewhere.

Around 4pm with dusk beginning to cast its shadow, Mike and I headed home shattered and taking half the mud from the fields with us in a car now devoid of raffle prizes, apart from a racing car and track that I won and a Victor Meldew book that Mike couldn’t quite believe he’d won!

Until next time.

Keep The Faith.

Neil

West wales would be a great venue, Carmarthen being the oldest city in wales perhaps one day we could make it happen Wink
