Has anyone opened a coil and made a repair?
My trusty Minelab small eliptical coil is sounding off all the time and I'm wondering if there is a loose wire inside.(not surprising with all the bashing it has had from stubble recently).I've tried taking off the cover and thoroughly cleaning cover and plate in case some small piece of metal or mineral was trapped, but still the problem. Is it possible to access the inside or is it sealed?
I've nothing to lose as it is useless as it is,but before I consign the warhorse to a hero's grave  Cry,I'd like to see if something could be done.
      Any advice and experience welcome.
             Thanks for reading.

Have you checked that your 'standard' coil isn't showing the same symptoms? If it is you could pretty much rule coil problems out.

Coils are sealed, so I'd start by looking at the plug end of it - that'd be the likeliest place for loose wires and there's more potential for damage at that end. Could be a dry solder joint.  If you've got a multimeter you could check for continuity from the plug  - you should find that two pairs of terminals will be connected as there's a transmitting coil and a receiving coil.

Just a thought before you go hacking into the search head itself.

Thanks Cymro,I'll give that a try.
The standard coil works fine.

No point opening as you'll find loads of epoxy in there so difficult to track down, the elliptical is only water resistant and not waterproof but my suspicion would be with the coil plug as this is the main culprit on the majority of machines, if you have a pair of pliers or better still mole grips handy then you can try pinching the locking nut that attaches the coil to the machine remember though that you don't want to squash it just pinch this should tighten up the "earth" connection which can cause false signals when swinging.
I should have asked does it sound off when not moving?

Hi Geoff-it only sounds off when moved, but will keep going even after the machine is stationary.I've been moving the connecting wire about from the control box downwards to the coil and it seems the problem is where the wire joins the coil-that big rubbery section.

Does Mr Steptoe know about this disgraceful behaviour . . . ??

If that's what it takes to get a new coil for Christmas I think I'll start saving up for one. I'll have you know I'm a happily married man  Wink
