Detecting Wales Rally 88 – The ‘Get off my drive’ rally.

The Detectingwales clan headed over the bridge to revisit a location that has been kind to members previously having produce at least three treasure items previously.

The early arrivals were joined by the organisers at about 8.30am when as is the way with such things we had a good fifteen minutes of minor confusion trying to confirm the parking location and fields with the allusive farmer. I had not been to this farm before and our chief organiser of todays event couldn’t make it due to unforeseen circumstances.

Unfortunately we managed to briefly upset a nearby farmer as the DW masses had parked along his drive and his initial friendliness quickly turned to a “Get off my drive” sort of stance and in fairness who can blame him. Mike’s idea of asking him for a rally there quickly went out the window!

Parked Up, Booted Up, Machines On, Spades Ready and we were into circa 140 acres of stubble, pasture and fertilized land.  With such a big farm and a relatively low number of detectorists it meant that it took a while before I bumped into anyone and that first person was Mike who had a livery button depicting what he adamantly thought was a pigeon.
Now I’m no expert on heraldry, but I’m sure this landed family back in the day weren’t sat around their grand dining table discussing their attributes, wealth and strength and as to what would best represent their local clout. Do you really think they struck upon the idea of a pigeon! Its most definitely a bird of prey, sat on a gauntlet – lovely example and quite collectable.

On a previous visit one of our members had discovered a silver and gilt Tudor head pin and it had been disclaimed following a Treasure process of two years or more. He had kindly donated the original to the farmer’s wife who in turn had donated it to the local museum. He had arranged for copies to be made so both would have an accurate record of the find. A great gesture – well done.

Next up came Dom who had uncovered a Roman or potentially Celtic coin. It needs a bit more research but it certainly had the aspects of Celtic currency and just didn’t quite feel Roman. We had a long chat about the fields, fatherhood and the detecting in general and along with his mate we meandered into the furthest field.

Shortly after entering this field I heard a “YESSSS” and could see Dom dancing in the distance. Reminded me somewhat of a cross between John Travolta and Bez from the Happy Mondays. Intrigued I headed over to see the biggest smile of the day and a tiny gold posy ring that was still heavily encased in mud hiding its full legend. Its so small that it must have been for either a child bride (in 1660 the legal age of marriage was 12 for a girl and 14 for a man) or a present to a wealthy child. Either way a great find for a regular rally attender.

After this we spent a good two hours in this field and pulled out all manner of bits of bronze, lead, buckles, horse pedants, musket balls, copper coins, etc but alas no more gold.

I headed back to the car to find that Nobby had a bit of a battered Tudor hammered coin and Geoff Hibs a hammered of Edward. There weren’t many people at the car park due to the farm being quite large so we are a bit low on photos but I know of two Bristol 1666 farthings (found by me) a Medieval horse dangle, another mystery hammered and a smattering a milled silver.

Mike and Nobby joined me and we ventured towards the Church fields where Mark Newbury had already found a lead Tudor dressed figure, but unfortunately we couldn’t figure out the correct fields between us and not wanting to trespass headed back to another field for a short spell.

We headed home at about 4:30 and it took well over two and a half hours due to the ridiculous traffic south of Bristol.
We have a few more rallies lined up over the rest of September and into October – check back on Detecting wales for more information.

Keep the Faith
Neil

Great write up Neil, and I thought you captured the essence of my dancing really well  Smiley

I've attached a close up pic of the posy ring. The inscription is "THINKE + ON + ME". As you say, it is very small so almost certainly for a child whether as a bride or just a gift. It's a lovely thing either way :0)

Great find Dom.

I guess you are aware this will need to be reported as potential Treasure.
