Viking coins and ingots found by a metal detectorist in Gwynedd have been declared treasure by a coroner.

The hoard, which includes silver pennies dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries, was discovered by Walter Hanks in Llandwrog in March.

National Museum Wales said some of the coins were made under the ruler Sihtric Anlafsson and were a type rarely found on the British mainland.

It said they were likely to have been hidden or lost between 1020 and 1030.

Dr Mark Redknap, of the department of history and archaeology at National Museum Wales, said the mixed nature of the collection showed bullion played an active role in the 11th Century economy and gave an idea of the wealth of Gwynedd at the time.

The museum now hopes to buy the coins and put them on display.

Sithric of Dublin"s family ,traders and merchants were kicked out of Dublin after the battle of Clonarf 1014 and set up a rival;mint on Isle of Man in about 1020 minting copies of Sithric ,known now as Hiberno Manx ..These coins got cruder till Godred Crovan beat these intruders in 1079 and then seem to stop...Almost certainly used as bullion as the knife is used to test the silverv content...Over twenty hoards have found here and connected to certains site on Man and i think these wealthly Dublins who had be collecting wealth for generatrions might have tempted the Priests for a place oin heaven or apiece land to build on and when the priest died thre location of hoard was lost.We always suspected that the vikings moved further afield to the West coast of Wales and England with big reserves of silver and small  amounts gold...Bloody marvellous find mate and well done ROB Smiley

An interesting read, I found a broken  piece of a Cnut short cross penny near where I live. It's in great condition and was found on a spud field. I suspect that there's more there but after searching for a few years for more finds nothing else has come to light, probably too deep.
