Wow Paul that's something a bit special isn't it Shocked does the hand belong to the statue ie the right scale, undoubtedly Roman and given the Snake I would say it's a depiction of Hercules fighting the river God Archelous, that is or was the common depiction of human/snake interaction. Lovely find well done Wink

yes geoff snake is very probably a match,been a few suggestions,arcelious, but he is usually depicted with snake wrapped around staff,it has been suggested that it is hercules and his 2nd labour fighting the hydra, will know more next week when i take it to the flo

I don't think there's a staff involved but a good shout on the Hydra in which case there's another 6 snake heads to be found so get back there and start searching Grin

yes there was a few roman bits turned up neil,geoff i griddled the area couldnt find anymore bits,maybe broken in antiquity..just dont get whats on the back of his head,and his wild unkempt beard,
