Just shows by the response on here, serious problems with the system, whilst it is a legal requirement  to hand treasure  items in as we all know, I can see items being kept by the finders / landowners, let's face it in the grand scheme of things there are worse crimes being committed. Just my thoughts ( not recommending it)  Grin Grin Wink

Ps I think your rite Val, re coroner .

There were serious delays in Cardiff due to not having a full time, regular coroner - the standins did the 'serious' work - as you would expect them to do, although it also seems to take a long time to get reports out too.

Got to agree with Val,why should it all be down to the coroner?
After all what does he know about historical values?
I'll bet he takes it down to the local pawn shop and says"EAR,OW MUCH YA GIMMI FER VIS VEN"Huh...LOL👍

Worth pointing out Chris.  The Coroner only decides if it's treasure or not.  If he says it is then it goes to the British Museum and gets put on another long list to go to the valuation committee.  I think they  'should'  know better about values than they seem to as the team is made up of professionals from different associated disciplines.  I believe they only meet once a month (or something like that).  So you can see why things are sooooooooo   slow.

I read somewhere I think in a detecting mag or coin news that a new law is coming in where you have to hand in and record single gold coin finds, even ones in your private collection Cheesy
