Found this last night. Elizabeth the 1st Shilling with a hole. Found on the same field I found a Charles Shilling earlier in the year, guess I'll be thrashing that field for the next few weeks  Grin

Could have a hole for several reasons so I've read, deliberate defacement in protest at her persecution of Catholics? atached to a string to prevent loss? attachment to clothing as a touchpiece? sure I've also read somehwere it might be due to the changeover from hammered to milled coinage so remaining hammered coins where pierced to indicate they were hammered and had a limited circulation time left before milled coinage took over completely?
