I gather that old woollen and cotton clothes and textiles were shredded and put on the fields as fertiliser - it was called 'shoddy.'

That's why we're forever finding buttons with our detectors. And possibly hem weights . . .

Thanks for that Cymro, well I never knew that, and as you rightly say that's a very good reason why we get so many buttons during a field search, oh,and here's a thought, all you need after you find a button is find a thimble, and of course, then look out for a "cotton field"..... LOL!!!! Got it??

Sorry Cymro although it's a often spouted reason it's total rubbish with no basis in fact, although shoddy did exist and was used on certain crops this was offcuts and seconds that couldn't be used by the mills and tends to be restricted to the cotton mill areas. Buttons were an expensive addition to clothing and could and would have been recycled Wink

Can I see 1703/5 on the coin.  Looks like a George 3rd half penny or penny.

Those lead buttons were also used on curtains.

Don't blame me, blame Wikipedia. I looked it up straight after I started finding buttons.

Sorry for any duff information - I am but the conduit . . .  Wink

Hey Cymro, you mentioning "conduit" In Pembroke where I live, there is a road called the "conduit", it was one of the main water arteries to Pembroke castle.Apparently, Mr Oliver Cromwell, stopped the water from the " conduit " getting to the castle during the siege  of Pembroke castle during the English cival war,
Dunno, just thought you might like to have this little snippet  of history.!!

The coin looks more like a George I halfpenny - if Val can read '17 x 3' on it then it will be 1723....

It still looks like 1703 but it can't be because then it would had been Anne and she was looking the other way (Like most of women do)  Well corrected probono.

Known as a Senior moment Chris.  Nice find.
