Interesting - I'd read this article a few years back, so it was good to see it again.

I've been cleaning coins for over 20 years now, and used to use some of his methods, but have moved on to other techniques - but then I mostly clean silver coins.

One thing he did say is that silver-washed coins are the hardest to clean - very true indeed - many are unsaveable.

Apparently the museum uses Rochelle salts, but I haven't tried those yet.

I agree silver washed coins a very delicate. Mechanical cleaning under stereo microscope is what I do.  Some times I use very light solution of citric acid and ear buds.
Rochelle salt was used in the process of silvering mirrors and I belive that it precipitates silver and makes it easier to mechanicaly remove it never tried it. Thanks for the info I shall try it one day.
