Ooo Errr    Now that's a really odd one Paul.   If it's a forgery, it's got to be contemporary, it looks so old.  Wish I knew a bit more about coins.  It looks to be Celtic but can I see S W on one side.

I eagerly await more  experienced opinion. Wink

From my one and only Saxon sceat I remember seeing a reference to the standing figure showing signs of having a bust?

Hi Geoff, it's bronze mate, never had anything other than Celtic /Roman , from here , it is a strange one for me. Anyway.

Well like Doug's it has a "crucifix" top right so that basically rules out Celtic or even Roman before the 4thC, I don't think I've ever known a field to be the sole depositary of one or two ages as the odd spanner gets thrown in to mess up the picture and I hate to have to tell you that any silver paper or ring pulls you've had off the field aren't Roman Grin

If it's bronze, it's likely to be a contemporary issue - the engraver (being generous) was almost certainly illiterate - and so has carved the bust as they have seen on a coin, and not realised that the die needs to be carved in reverse.

The thing that looks like a cross on the reverse (top image) is likely to be the 'X' from PAX AVG as a reverse. - although I'm interested that the obverse bust isn't radiate - that would suggest 4th century, which don't usually have a PAX AVG reverse.

Well, the coin in question has an obvious chest, which the sceat doesn't - that points to a female personification of some sort. I do have some roman coins with points at the ends of the legends (although those are mainly republican, some later roman coins - the very late Ae4 with cross reverses do have points on the crosses, and there are Byzantine examples too).

It's the left facing bust that bothers me more than anything else - no real proper examples to go on (can't think of many later 3rd and 4th century busts with curly hair, except Quintillus, who is of the correct time for a minim copy, but then you would expect the radiate crown to go with it).
