Surely if your money has gone into a bank account, then the authorities don't have to look far for these villains. Or have i missed part of the story???
They would close the account as so as they were paid, then open another bogus bank  account Huh

That's not the scam. What they do is sell you the detector over a mobile phone conversation and give you a false name, address/location (far from where you live, eg Isle of Wight), they tell you that they will ring you back in a day or two with their bank details. In the meantime they buy something else like an expensive bike or another detector for the negotiated same amount and they give them your name, they then ask them for their bank details in order to pay them and arrange collection.  Then they ring you back with the other guys bank details, you transfer the money and the scammer goes to collect item you have ended up paying for. You end up with nothing, the other innocent guy gets your money and the scammer get an expensive item for free that he will sell on. Obviously he cuts up the sim on the mobile. Dozens of people are getting ripped off this way every week.
