Whilst sorting through my scrap and assigning each object to it's associated scrap metal box, I came across this piece of lead and whilst removing the dirt before dropping the object in the scrap lead box I noticed some sort of imprint.

Is it some sort of official seal, was some one trying to make counterfeit coins, or was a coin dropped onto a puddle of molten lead?

Not the best of photographs but perhaps good enough for you to shed some light on the object!

That looks very much to me like someones attempting to counterfit coinage (Vicky shilling anyone???)

Casa Dos had a lovely example a few years ago - they are quite a rarity to find as puishments would have been the gallows or a damn good spanking!

Just goes to show what can be lurking in the deepest, darkest, scrap bucket!

Interesting find Chris as Neil says it's certainly an impression of a bit of Vicky silverware but how it would fit into the whole counterfeiting process I'm not sure, it doesn't have to be molten all you need is a piece of sheet lead, a coin and a hammer.....we used to do it as kids Wink

I guess that it would be about the size of a shilling. It has the shield topped by a crown but the few letters that I am able to discern don't seem to match those in the photograph posted above.  Undecided

Interesting find Chris, your scrap bucket turns up another treasure.

Hi Will,
Well; having double checked the contents of that there bucket and made sure that there was no more treasure hiding in there, I collected up all the sorted scrap and whizzed it down to be weighed in at my local scrap yard. I also took my saved up gold to town and sold that.

Mr scrap man gave me £32.44 for all my lead, mixed brass, and heavy copper. The jeweller/pawnbroker gave me £42 for a gold signet ring but said that he was unable to confirm that a gold dental filling was actually gold and declined to buy it from me.

With that little lot, and having raided my piggy bank, I now have enough cash to buy a third block of premium bonds.  Grin

Jeez............I wish I could find less scrap and more "GOLD"!  Wink
