Yesterday Deadlock honoured me with his company for a days detecting down here in deepest, darkest Somerset, I had only visited this site on a handful of occasions in the past but it had shown promise with finds from early Roman brooches through too Lizzy hammereds and so was a bit of a blank canvas as far as what we expected.
Well to cut to the chase my very first diggable signal was to be the find of the decade for me and it wasn't even on my wish list the reason being is that they're as rare as hen's teeth in Somerset, it was a Saxon continental porcupine Sceat 695-750 Shocked
While in the east of the country they dig these up for a pastime there are only 3 recorded for the whole of Somerset because during the time of this coins production Somerset was still in the process of being conquered by the Saxons and the Welsh from Dumnonia were being pushed back into Devon and Cornwall.
My only other finds were a battered 17thC tradesman's farthing and a Roman grot while Al did get a lovely folis of Constantine the Great and a far better condition 17thC farthing along with a fistful of coins.
After 37 years detecting there are not many finds that get my pulse racing but this was certainly a day I'll remember.
