  Thank you John,a really interesting article.When showing the whorls I have found  to friends I have been asked how they are used and I've had to confess I had no idea.Now I know, although I wouldn't like to give a demonstration. Smiley

The spindle whorl is still being used now a day. Though now, it is usually a bigger wooden disc that is used. Different sizes depending on weight of yarn / balance. A photo  example can be seen here:
