David only a tiny percentage of meteorites are detectable, the majority being rock, and these are iron and so would be id'd as such and probably ignored Undecided

hi geoff ,

i know a little about them,  most can be detected by our equipment but as you say would register in the iron range

i also know someone with a very large one he found field walking localy he was offered 70k for it but turned it down (  does nt need the money) its so heavy for its size its untrue,  when you pick it up it really surprises you , some japanese experts are looking at a slice of it ,  the site where he found it is out of bounds for detecting unfortunately as i would love to find one

Obviously the place to detect them is in wild outbacks of the world where unlike Britain man hasn't contaminated the soil with 2500 years worth of rusty "bits" Wink

It's always a good sign as it can mean there has been metal working on the site and "could" date your site back a lot, lot further than the Normans but as it's the second oldest man worked metal the date could be 5000 years or last week Huh

Try giving it a bit of a file so you can see what's under all the crud.  Can you tell from the signal on the detector if it's copper  or iron ??

hi Val, its defiantly not iron, i use a neodymium magnet to test and the detector give a good strong signal.
I did give it a file and im sure its copper coloured underneath.

In that case Geoff is probably right.  It could be evidence of metal working in the area but could also stretch out the time line as far as age is concerned.  Anything from Bronze age to  Huh??

Last year I found a square(ish) piece of pure Iron (Not magnetic).  I only dug it because it gave a different iron signal than usual.  After a little research I have convinced myself it is first cast from a Bloomery.  That, of course, means metal working in the field and a wide open range of ages.  All very interesting stuff.
