New coin today

Hi all,

I added this coin to the collection today, its very ugly but it is what it is, if it was a usual common penny it would be scrap (Its not far from that anyway the wife hates it )
Il leave it for someone else to id just so I know its id 'able.
Once its been id, its easy to find my example on the net as its been in a couple of auctions (1987) (2012)
My mate has only seen 3 of these coins in 50 years of collection Bristol coins, its a rare thing in any grade. I went for it, as the next one may be years away......lets hope you can id it

Edward via first issue, the silver went very poor after that. I've got a sixpence with only the central portion left but a nice portrait. It's the only one I've ever found. Nice addition to your collection.

This penny iv shown is struck in poor silver, if you look at the photo you can see it looks very brittle, it looks as if the portrait is ready to flak off

Him and his father certainly knew how to debase coinage ! The piece of a sixpence that I have got looks like one of those flaky Victorian pewter medals that you find occassionaly. It's still quite a rare coin Dale , you'll have to get out and dig up a better example mate !

The Edward VI sixpences was only struck in fine silver, to be flaking yours may be a forgery? is it a early shilling? here's my sixpence example I got to get rid of.

My piece of coin has been recorded with the PAS, and identified as Edward vi . Too tired to look now but I'll have a look at it over the weekend and let you know properly.

Yeah its a great find mate, iv never found a Edward VI before, it would be nice to cross off the list Its the Edward VI Bristol shilling you want to find, it very rare there's only a few known, the Bristol museum and British museum has a example.
I waiting on a new book it shows the whole Bristol museum collection   (sylloge of coins 19)

I was looking at what the Doc said, and trying to work out why Edward IV Bristol was scarce Then I saw my mistake!

Definitely something to look out for - have managed a 2nd period shilling, but that was tower mint.
