I had a good days detecting yesterday - found quite a few of the normal early 20th century coins plus a nice George 111 silver, a very old roman and a live .45 acp round!! (has now been collected by the police) I thought I had found a saxon brooch as its very near a saxon graveyard but alas its a big button and a really early milled coin that was so worn I thought it was a hammered -  but I will keep searching as I know there's more good stuff in there - apologies for the wind noise

Well done Will a good days detecting, I like the bullhead and the tradesman's farthing is a cracker, the Saxons didn't have buttons they don't really appear as finds until the 17thC and the piece that the farmer took is the centre side piece from a 17th-18thC buckle the hole shows it had a separate crossbar and so must be after 1680.
Next too a Saxon cemetery aye? that puts you in only two possible places in Somerset Grin
A word of advice to keep your sanity when detecting in Somerset either always think your find isn't Saxon or if you really want Saxon then move lol As rare as hens teeth around these parts Wink

Thanks for the advice - I am going to get some decent books to help me with my identification as well, any recommendations are welcome
