I have an explorer se , some ground i have is heavily mineralized and  with the sensitivity set 25+  the machine nulls out a lot so i  don't have a  constant hum

i'm told you always need the hum  (except of course when your descriminating something out ) i have just one line of discrimination down the left

But if i throw a coin on the ground even when i have no hum it picks up the coin , so is the the hum really neccersary ?

and how do people get on with machines that do not have the back ground hum ?  i guess they would never know they are missing stuff

The nulling is an important part of the information that the Minelabs give, when they null they basically aren't detecting so the more nulls the slower you have to go or the smaller the coil you need, if you didn't hear the null you could happily be detecting all day, or so you think, while in fact you have been following a buried railway line and not detected at all Grin
It also informs you where a greater use of the land has occurred and so the better places to search, while the minelab's are very slow at recovery, which they have to be due to the way they analyse signals, all machines null to some extent it's just you can't hear it doing it, a case of ignorance is bliss. Try and learn to use/suffer it with an open screen....no nulling at all Wink

Yep i do use an open scren sometimes for a short while untill my ears need a rest .

The thing is as i say if i throw something on the ground when its nulled it still picks it up , perhaps thats because its a very easy signal for the machine to pick up on then ?
