That's fantastic - glad you checked in the hole more than once Smiley - When I found my hoard I'm pretty certain that about 6 months earlier I'd found one of the coins, but I didn't bother to check for more!

When i found what was there, I had to go back a second day and I took a small area of turf off and found the rest that little bit deeper (but it was a scatter)

Just a quick update - I went back to the site today with a mate and we carefully widened and deepened the hole (proper archaeology style) but found nothing further. We also detected the surrounding area very carefully, and likewise no further coins. So it's 'just' the four. Obviously I'm still over moon with them!

Thanks again all.

I'm wondering if anyone can help with a question about one of the coins - The bottom left coin in the first picture (showing the reverses) appears to be double struck, ie the letters appear stretched and it seems to say 'ReGGno' as opposed to 'ReGno' - is this a common thing, and if not is it of any significance?

You find that sort of thing on Charles coins quite often (and others) - The coin has been struck more than one and there was some die shift.

You see it very often on the halfcrowns that were struck using a rocker press too.

There are known spelling mistakes (CHISTO for CHRISTO for instance, or AVSPCE for AVSPICE on a crown I have), but this isn't one.

I appreciated seeing them at Cardiff Scan Club yesterday - much better holding them in my hand at finds of the month than just seeing a picky Smiley
