The Thornbury hoard

I took a trip to the Bristol museum today to see the Thornbury hoard, I did a few photos just to show, in case someone wanted to see it...The condition of the coins was very good.

I was also looking at items excavated from the KingsWeston villa near the Roman town/settlement Abona what was interesting as its local to me, but the funny thing was leaving the museum my phone rang, it was my mate Jo he said iv got the key for Kingsweston villa do you want to have a look how strange is that.
So I also took a few photos of the mosaics floors.

It was found in 2004 about 7 miles from my house.

If you want to do a little research you will be better off looking up Abona, we know it as sea mills, near Avonmouth

Back in 1969 K Branigan produced a book "The Romans in The Bristol Area"

I still have my copy.

Anyone interested in Roman times, it shows roman sites of interest all over the Bristol area.

Abona the port at Sea Mills was used for import and export, including lead pigs which were shipped from there to places as far a Rome for their water systems.

This small 4 shillings book is full of detailed information and was issued by The Bristol branch of the historical Association at the University of Bristol.   Jerry.

I seen a roman lead pig once, it was on display somewhere, but I cant remember where I know it was mined from the Mendip hills, and weighted about 70kgs

There used to be one in Weston museum and as far as I remember it was found on Vespasian farm (dead give away lol)  at Green Ore above Wells

Iv never been to Weston museum Geoff, but thinking of it now it may be the Roman Baths I seen it....im sure it was

hi dale just had those q staters weighed by a local jeweller corio q stater 1.1 grams the other recent one found 1.1.8 grams different dies but it looks like the same coin.

jbm,does the  book mention the crossing at black rock to avonmouth?
