I recently gained permission to detect on a new building development, providing I stayed outside the compound perimeter fence. That still give me plenty of ground to detect on, so I paid the site a visit yesterday morning and assessed the ground for a plan of attack! Finished up using the EuroAce with my new Nel Tornado coil fitted. Worked through to lunch time and then gave up due to some problems developing with  the EuroAce.

Plenty of coins, lead, copper, and brass turning up; so it looks promising for future visits. Once I sort out the EuroAce, that is! Interestingly, I bagged a 1926 Irish penny and a broken clay pipe bowl.
( The clay pipe was made in Dublin! )

I found that the machine had gone off after placing it on the ground whilst using the ProPointer and from time to time the machine shut down when I pressed the pin pointing button. I did open the battery box and checked the battery contacts; one battery was a little out of line and perhaps not making a good connection. The batteries were also down to the last two bars on the power indicator. I think that the pinpointing facility puts extra drain on the batteries and with them being low, perhaps that is why the machine shut down.

I plan on visiting the site next Wednesday and will make sure that the detector has fresh batteries in. I will also make sure that the power indicator is indicating full strength before I commence detecting. It may also be worth changing batteries before they get that low next time!  Wink

Ah I see perhaps re charged batteries isn't the way to go Chris perhaps when you recharge them they don't resume full power i.e 1.5 volts I have noticed that if you put a volt meter on used batteries they don't have the full 1.5 volts. I was told that using re chargeable batteries i.e nicads and ni hydride was not a good idea because on full charge they only have a voltage of 1.2 volts which cuts the total voltage down considerably.
I take it you didn't have spare batteries with you Chris?
Good luck and HH next time you try the new permission out Chris  Smiley

Stupidly, I left my spare batteries at home. The standard batteries that I do recharge, tend to hold less and less capacity each time they are charged but this is the first time that I have run into this problem. I normally carry fresh new batteries, as well as well as normal batteries that I have recharged. I will make doubly sure that I have plenty of batteries ready for next Wednesday!  Grin

Chris, when a building site commences normally they strip the top soil down to the clay and heap it up somewhere. That's the soil to investigate if you are allowed.

I know, I know, I know!!!!!!!!!!  Cry   There is a great heap of spoil that they have skimmed off and it is sitting within the fence boundary for their compound. I visited the site this morning asked the site manager could I detect the heap of spoil if I donned protective footwear and a hard hat, but he said that was a no go due to health and safety regulations and insurance. He said that I was ok to continue detecting where I was doing. I graciously thanked him and said that I fully understood his position and that was why I offered to don safety gear. I'm going to the site next Wednesday and plan on spending the whole day there.
As we were talking, the site engineer had a favourable look on his face and I was tempted to think that he would have given me permission. Perhaps between now and Wednesday some one will have a change of mind. I still have a lot of ground to go at and I am counting on a lot of older finds. I will have to get the prayer mat out and do some grovelling.  Wink

Hi Richie,
I have just checked out my EuroAce documentation and the detector is still within the warranty two year period. Once I change the batteries, I don't think that I will have any more problems. But should the problem reoccur; I know that Regtons will look after me.

Chris, well done on the finds and getting permission on,  or around a building site.
I've got one coming up and have permission to detect the area in full before they start.  I've sent an interim report to the M.D and mentioned that I hoped the finds would be more interesting when the started excavating provided I still had permission.  So far I've had no reply. Ah Well, take it as it comes eh.
Now Batteries.  I have preached about this before and given up but being as it's you I'll mention it again. Roll Eyes
BUY SOME ENELOOP   They are only slightly more expensive but have a much longer life than any of the others. They don't suffer from memory problems,  charge each time to the full capacity and don't deplete on charge if left unused.  I use 8 in a pod for my Safari and usually get at least 10 hours from one charge.

Well done Chris I have found that if you use the very best rechargables in the Garrett and recharge after two blocks have been used and dont let them go any lower they hold the charge well.

Thanks for the interest folks, and thanks for the battery advice Val. I didn't realise that you are using a Safari. I was contemplating upgrading to a Safari but at £800 they are presently out of my reach. My wife, Margaret, won £300 on the Irish lottery last week and gave me a £20 tip. So, with my £84 scrap money and the £20 tip, I now have the first hundred pounds towards an upgrade.

I have been watching videos for the Safari on Youtube and have even bought the book by Andy Sabisch but it is going to be a while befor I can afford one!  Cry
