Well, you id it in the same way as pretty much any other coin - although looking in Spinks Coinage of England would be a start - lots of pictures in it for comparison.

In the case of this coin - aside from the portrait, size and material, the legend starts 'CAROLUS' so Charles, the VI behind the head indicates a sixpence. Can really see the initial (mint) mark to tie it down to a year (again the Spink book has the mint marks and years in it). For some coins it actually says the mint town it was made in. In this case it doesn't but the general style indicates it was the regular tower mint.
