It's usually known as a cut half (half a penny (ha'penny)) they were cut by putting them on a hard surface and banging with a sharp knife or cut with snips. They were cut to give change as there was very little small coinage around if any, if it was cut again it would be to produce two farthings (cut quarters).

Nice cut halfpenny. The king is John, moneyer Iohan, mint Ipswich and Class 5b or 5c.
