A bleak and dreary morning could not dampen my enthusiasm for today's rally. Chef promised goodies of an Italian pedigree and I intended holding him to his word. I was sure we could find a suitable lynching tree if the need arose.

7.00 a.m saw a rather tired Nobby complete with pillow and comfort blanket climbing into the blue meanie that is my brand new £200 Peugeot. Shortly after we picked up JCB armed with his 1000 litre coffee flask then it was onwards to the sunny promised land and all that Chef had guaranteed.

Now a little known fact about Detecting Wales is that once a year, for our members amusement and very often bemusement we reenact that fantastic cartoon 'Whacky Racers'. This entails DW organisers followed by a convoy of detectorists trawling through the lanes in search of the parking fields... I know we have a varied membership with members hailing from Wales, England, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Scotland but this morning I was called a variety of names, mostly of an Anglo Saxon origin - all in good humour I may add.... I think.

Once everyone was pointed to the correct fields myself and Chef discussed what we thought might show up today and the general thought was Roman and Medieval - Chef was bang on the money. In no time at all a fresh faced Nobby walked over to myself with a stunning 14th C Seal Matrix absolutely gorgeous and I think a first for the Tonyrefail terror. Shortly after that I managed some medieval of my own in the shape and form of an Elizabethan button. Chef then informed me of a cracking Gold Hammered coin weight found by Outlaw who also later in the day went on to get a brace of Roman coins, a denari and a hammered coin. In no time at all DW's favorite Muppet - Floyd Pepper aka Radnor Bandit approached me sporting his own Roman coin - Radnor Bandit also had a lovely early beehive thimble - something high on my wishlist.

Throughout the morning shouts went out over the fields announcing more Roman coins and artifacts including a couple of Roman brooches from Dawson as well as seven roman coins one being a large lovely condition Follis - that's just greedy  Wink Not to be outdone Nobby came along with his own Follis of equal quality and size as well a spur. I bumped into Kernal custard who had a hammered Charles 1st as well as his own roman coins. Colin came across at that point and showed of his huge pot leg, a William coin and a roman coin he seemed happy. Landyman weighed in with a cut half and a Mary groat and speaking to Anthony James shortly after, he showed me his Scottish hammy and a roman. Victor found the third roman brooch of the day and his mate Antiqueboy as always full of smiles was armed with a Jetton (one of many today) a spectacle buckle (again one of many today) and a Heraldic pendant - stunning!

SAS head guy Ferret had a lovey pendant of his own as well as a hammered coin, I believe Ferret went on to have some roman coinage as well. Our very own Cornish compatriot - Villain had what was to be Seal matrix number two of the day and within minutes of seeing that old Golden Salty veins DWB himself walked over showing off Seal matrix number three as well a stealing some of us land lubbers medieval silver and sporting his 1st, 2nd and 3rd ever Roman coins - he should not be encouraged. Last lot that I can remember easily was Doug turner, he had a nice Jetton a dogs head button and a lovely buckle. Later on the field and after three attempts at a roman but to no avail, Hoover G showed me a collection of finds (including a Roman) that showed how hard he detected today, he had stacks of finds - very impressive fella fair play.

There is so much that I've missed out and that only goes to show how busy a day we had for 35 members. I know there is plenty of hammered in the photos and loads more romans as well as a plethora of artifacts, buckles, mount of all descriptions and coinage - Please feel free to shout out if you see your finds not named.

Last going off i spoke to the farmer and he is only too happy to have us return Sunday coming, this will be restricted as he is not keen on too many vehicles so car share will be essential.

Many thanks to Chef for checking out the land and meeting the farmer, Nobby and JCB for all the help this morning and Deadlock for taking a tump of photos and sending them on to me tonight, well done guys!

See you next week guys, its been a blast!
