Hi all, I'm going on hols to the Maldives in March, lucky me Grin!! Can anyone tell me if there are any restrictions on metal detecting out there.

I've bought a cheap second hand Whites Surfmaster to try my luck on the beaches, hoping to find lots and lots of gold rings, but don't know if detecting is allowed. I've looked on the internet but can't find any info about it so I'm hoping someone on DW can help me.

Looking forward to your replys and thanks in advance.

I am sure Bob (RJM) done some detecting over the Maldives a couple of years ago and done a big write up in one of the detecting magazines (Searcher?) regarding it if my memory servers me right. May even be a link on DW somewhere.

So I am sure he will give you some info if he sees this thread.

Enjoy your holiday Smiley

Maldives very strict muslim.

I go every year for a hot relaxing holliday, it isnt likely that on a cold day the rings drop off as most of the time even when it rains the temp stays 80 degrees, like walking into a warm bath. Unlike cornwall where you cannot get in past your ankles and thats in the summer Grin Grin

I would ask your travel agent, even contact the resort customer manager and they should advise. I would get hung drawn and quarted by the misses if i took my detector there, though most of the islands are very small and the beaches are man made.

Would be interested to hear how you get on,
enjoy your hols m8

Thanks for the reply Outlaw. The wife likes to sunbathe so as long as the sun is out she won't miss me I hate laying in the sun and need to be doing something so thought a bit of detecting would be the way to go. Undecided

On reflection I would be careful and ask for permission.

Every island that we have been too, the beaches are mainly man made, and every day you will see them being raked and tended by the staff.

A couple of years ago we went to one that was in need of modernising, and you could see the sand bags below where the tide had washed the top levels away.

I would assume also that to dig off the beaches might also cause concern since the coral is protected and they will not want people digging near it.

Just send an email to the resort manager and he will say yes or no or ask your travelagent for advice.

The Maldivians are very strict, I would ask if I was you.
