Found this at our rally the weekend. It looks very much like an axe head but its made of iron not bronze.
It is a worked shape not accidental and the narrow end has what appear to be protrusions running along side the
blade as if to strengthen the overall design. (That's my take on this anyway) Anybody with knowledge of these type of things?
Thanks for reading
Ysbyty

Just took the time totake a better set of images.

Agree with what your saying Geoff. Totally inpractical to dig every signal but just imagine what were missing..

Hi Mike,   I keep coming back to your 'iron' axe.  I love and hate finds like this.  You just never know for sure exactly what you've got.
If it's iron it could be very early and might be worth a mention to your local PAS FLO.  I know from a find I made last year it might be difficult to promote any interest (it's not Roman) but it's worth a try.
A very interesting and nice find all the same.

Morning Val,

Our documented history extends back almost to the beginning of any written records and folklore before that probably.
Its back to the old, 'do we dig evey thing' debate. I dig lots of iron and don't really mind as some of it can be very interesting
and tells a story. Is the hobby becoming too blinkered and the only finds people are interested in are coins, jewellery, or have a financial
value. Come on everybody lets have some thoughts..

As you've probably noticed from some of my posts I also often dig iron signals.  Not all, obviously, but sometimes I think you get a feeling for certain signals.
I agree with you Mike, some iron finds can be interesting and they all tell part of the story of the area. For instance, I know there was a Blacksmiths forge in one of my fields and iron smelting in another. Finds just a bit different from bits of tractor.
I would like to find more evidence of  Human residence though.

Blinkered no, selective maybe Undecided but even you say that " I dig lots of iron" why not all or none? How do you decide which to dig? Why should large iron be any more interesting than small?
On some of my sights if you decided to dig all iron you would be digging every other swing and an acre of land would take an eternity.
Yes I totally agree that in a perfect world we should be digging all signal and by not doing so we are undoubtedly missing not only interesting iron finds but also some more valuable deeper and dodgy signaled finds but practicality demands some degree of discrimination. On a historic habitation site then yes it is definitely worth taking the time and digging the iron, not only to see what it is but if you clear it out then you may get even more non-ferrous finds Wink

Was using the T2 but only have the std coil at the moment.
It was an 'iffy' signal but was the same in both directions, so the safest plan is to dig.
You know when something's non ferrous with the T2 but you don't know if there's ferrous close to something nice which can
give you the 'grunts' as well as good tones.
