Cheers for the in the ground photo Kev. Looks to me to be a clip on earring with possibly an amber stone in it. If you can, hold the amber up to sunlight and you should see flaws in it where the sap had oxygen, plant matter, insects if your lucky, etc whilst it was forming millions of years ago.

As for period - I would need to have a closer look - looks Art Nouveau to me, but then that style was also revisited in the fifties. 

The acid test for amber is to heat a small needle and gently press againt it - if it smells of plastic, then plastic it is! This will leve a small mark though, so probably best to avoid unless you can get to the rear of it.
