Have a look at this:
http://www.garysdetecting.co.uk/hoard_test.htm
(not sure if I have put the link in correctly - let me know if it doesnt work  Angry)
Interesting to see what we think the signal would be on a hoard, and how deep we would expect the detector to pick the target up. Smiley

Hi Debbie, I think if I buried something it would be quite deep, the hoards that I am aware of have given a clue, i.e. some pieces being dragged up by a plough which makes you focus on the area that the items have come up in. Most that I am aware of go down to the natural clay or rock, so I think it is right ; there are many hoards out there which may never be found !

Great link that Debbie,i suppose how deep the hoard was burried would depend on the type of soil and what tools were available to dig the hole at the time,if they had been in a rush to burry the hoard or it was in stoney ground then it would'nt be that deep, but as steve says the deeper the safer it would be,but at least the test's seem to confirm that a lot of depth claims are miss leading.

WELL, my mate's scattered bronze age hoard was just under the surface,

Now then, i'd found a few of those aluminium penicillin tubes that day and one only just before my hoard,  i  said to myself when i had the next signal oh, another tube, i dug it anyhow in case it was another axehead that have been dragged over from the other side, well you would wouldn't you. dig everything  then,   well it turned out to be  a small section of a sword blade , that was about an inch under the surace,  then with just a wafer of soil in bettween all the others and axeheads , they went down to about 6 to 8 inches,

when i brought the farmer over to see,  he just couldn't make out how  the plough hasn't hit them and scatterd them all of the many years of ploughing,
but to me the signal wasn't any bigger than those medicin tubes,
