Hi Deadlock

The Portuguese coin is a lovely X ( 10 ) Reis King José ( 1750 - 1777 ) date 1764 copper 35,5 mm 12,7 Grs

It is a great specimen.

REX.PORTUGAL ET ALGARBIORUM  ( King of Portugal and Algarve )
On these coins the Portuguese mentioned Portugal and the Algarve ( south of Portugal ) as 2 diferent regions, this is due to the fact that the Algarve, ( hence AL as start of the name ) for many years was a muslim province and in 1128 in Guimarães ( North Portugal ) the first king of Portugal  ( King Afonso I 1128 - 1185 ) and when Portugal as a country was formed, started a campaign from the north to south of pushing back the Muslim ocupied portugal and establishing what we call today Portugal, The Algarve was the last region to be gained. In the Algarve it is rare or impossible to find coinage from the first Portuguese kings due to the muslim rule and occupancy 1144 1151.
As mentioned this campaign started from the North to south being the Algarve the last region to be re-conquered, therefore it is commun of coins from this period to state King of Portugal & the Algarve ( recently re conquered )

There are 2 variations of this coin
The only diference is the space between DEL.GRATIA, one has a space between the two words and the other does´nt. Value wise they are both the same.

Great find..........

I have found a couple but never intact, due to being big, tractor ploughs and so on generally break them..

Congratulations I would be very pleased with that one....

Best regards
Moncó
