Hi all,
Whilst I was out and about down Caswell earlier today I noticed a couple of other detectorists were using small spades with a sharp pointed end, I was struggling with my flat edged mini spade as there were hundreds of stones just beneath the surface.
Would I be better off with a sharp edged spade, if so which would, in your opinion, be the best buy. Not really on a budget so would welcome any comments, thanks.

the short spades made by draper the pointed typeare ok but on a busy day will make your back sore bending over .

what I did was buy a mini spade , bought a long shaft , grind rivets off and fit new shaft  , bit of a pain but worth it .

also the black adda range are excellent spades

I use the same one as Matthew suggested and I fill the back of the spade, where the shaft meets
the blade with silicone, it stops it getting clogged up with mud

When I first started out I bought mostly cheap rubbish and they all either bent or snapped and it was a nightmare trying to dig with a bent fold up army shovel lol....buy a good one first as last, it will be well worth it. I got the short Draper one mentioned above and drilled holes to attach a bungy cord so it fits over my shoulder which makes it easy to carry ..... Wink
