Today I was in WHSmith and saw an article, not sure which detecting magazine now, about a Roman brooch that was found on the Wantage rally this year, I wasn't there, and it was the same one in the FID Winter booklet 2013 on page 20, almost certain. I read it briefly but from what I understand, it was actually planted there the night before, or the previous year knowing there would be a rally, and I think that is quite shocking. I assume the finder is completely innocent and new nothing about it? I think the story was mentioning a possible two more brooches discovered in the area in the last few years that may now be thought to have been deliberately put in the ground to be found. It was also mentioning pen ink placed in the decoration to act as enamel and the brooch having a plastic film of sorts, did I read that right, so was the brooch a fake too? Anybody got the magazine with the article to clarify? Basically at the end of the article it was saying how much time this has wasted, the FLO's and everybody else involved documenting these finds and I can't agree more.

There was a newspaper article about it  posted on here recently. Maybe someone can pull the post back up for you. A friend of mine said he was present when the brooch with the pen and film coating was handed in to the Flo David Williams. He said he found it strange at the time because this person had apparently found another three quality roman items when everyone else was struggling to find even a roman grot.

Personally, I'm glad someone has been caught out doing it. What that person now has to realise is that he/she will no longer be trusted with any future claim of finding or any past finds for that matter.

Strangest story of a find that I actually heared at this years W W rally ,was a gold coin which was found. I can't remember whether it was a sovereign or some other coin. The strange thing about
it was, it had been burned. There were people talking in the marquee about an aeroplane
crashing on one of the fields in world war 2, and the possibility that one of the crew members, might have dropped it ? or the other explanation was that the plane might actually have crashed
right on the spot where the coin was buried. Huh Huh I did actually see the coin being offered for sale to one of the coin dealers in the marquee, but he didn't offer enough for it  .

It more likely to have been taken to the rally by the finder. It always goes on.

I once found a Lizzy sixpence which looked as if it had been burnt in a fire. My theory is that it had been caught up in the stubble at a time when they used to burn it off in the fields.

My theory is that it had been caught up in the stubble at a time when they used to burn it off in the fields.

That's a quite reasonable theory as to why things can come up looking burned. It's not that long ago that almost all harvested fields were burned before being ploughed.
