This has been I.d on UKDFD  as a Saxon hanging bowl mount, however a few people have cast doubt on the I.d so was wondering if you guys had any thoughts ?

Certainly looks to have an age and the holes in it are not machine made. If it was a furniture fitting I would expect the holes to be linear to each other, which they are not.

The gilding looks about right as well - personally don't think it's a draw escutcheon.

Is there much of an Anglo Saxon history where you found it!

I agree  with the ID of a Saxon hanging bowl mount

Its a classic Saxon design  just like the saucer brooches

Thanks for the comments, it came off a DMV that has produced a few short cross pennies etc but also a Saxon annular brooch ! Have sent photos to my FLO as I'm working away but will show him in the new year and see what he thinks.....

I'm on the fence with this one as I can see where the idea of a handle backing plate comes from,
[ Technically not an escutcheon as they are normally shield shaped lock covers ] as I have handled hundreds of them over the years, but as I have never seen a saxon mount like this , then
i'd be interested to hear what the flo thinks.
