The 6inch maps hold alot more information than you think....For instance a continous field boundary that has fields either side ,might indicate a lost track/road way...Buildings with a roof are black rectangles and ruins without roofs are white......Limekilns which have disappeared are pinpointed....Leats of of horizonal mills beside rivers can be found.....Long lost river fords........and i found hoard once through a x and the O.S. words medieval coins found here.......Cheers O.S. and  i hope you  all  have good  searching- ........ROB Smiley

I've been doing a bit of research on the web, of my local area and although I've come up with a few old maps the oldest one with any detail on is 1813, anything older is very basic with just villages and churches/chapels marked on them with general blobs for mountain ranges  Cheesy it's a wonder how people ever found their way around when travelling back then. I've tried to find tithe maps for my area but keep drawing a blank, it would appear I need to contact either NLW or the national parks, from previous experience of the BBNP I can already feel a headache coming on Undecided
Are the OS 1869/70 maps available on line or do you need to contact the OS.

This may be of use to you Mark as it has the original OS first series on it, just pop in your postcode and it will give you a selection of maps and it's free for a change Wink
