Welcome to DW Turbo Wink
There is more than one way to skin a cat so they say and equally there are several settings that people use with the Explorer but this is about the most common and in my mind the best Wink

Volume- max
Volume gain- 8 or 9
Threshold tone- 1
Variability- 10
Limits- 9
Response- smooth
Sounds- conduct
Recover- deep on : fast off
Iron mask- open.
Sensitivity-manual and as high as you can get it, try not to drop below 18. if using auto, set at max as machine will use this as it's possible highest setting.

Any problems just shout Wink

Yes but instead of smooth response, use "tones 3"

I have been using an se for a very long time as youre a beginner i would set it up as chef has suggested, but would lower sensitivity to about 14 until you get used to the sounds, then and only when you feel confident up the sensitivity up too 20 +, back off if it becomes too noisy., try placing different metals  such as leadd a silver coin, 20p coin,  bottle top piece of tin, horse shoe etc on top of ground and listen to the tones. Dig all 2way signals and you will soon learn the rubbish high tones as to the low tones (in conduct) that are good targets, try and detect using more so the ears rather than the display. If you use the display the manual explains the cross hair and its movements. Most importanbt of all, is a low and slow sweep. pm me if you need any further help. Grin

Sorry, I meant open screen ie no disc on iron mask and load the nail pattern in to the normal smart screen.
As Outlaw has said you may get a little confused by all the noise and if you do then as he say's turn your sens down though I wouldn't drop below 18 but you could drop you Audio Gain down to 7 which will quieten things down too, in fact the only two controls you will ever really adjust are the sens and the gain Wink

Have you managed to download the SE emulator? if not you can download it here;
http://explorer2.free.fr/download.html

It's no substitute for learning in the field but it can be useful in showing how each of the controls effect the machine Wink

You might find that your detector sounds like a pig squealing as though it's being mounted from behind by a rhino, but you'll get used to it  Grin Grin
