Welcome to DW Owen.   Have a look at Gary's Metal Detecting. He does some fair 2nd hand machines and is a good fella to deal with.

Best to look for one that's a good all rounder as already mentioned.

I started with a whites DFX and they seem too work well on both the beach and on different types of land. Also they are quite cheap second hand and seem to be widely available from all the suppliers.
