Paul a great find and your coins might have stacked together in a roll? As they are quite shiny and the air  or ground chemicals not has affected them ..Probably wrapped in a cloth and some hoards in rolls are thought to be held together by goose grease or candle wax..This weekend iam going out on a hoard site where hammered coins are coming out in a similar condition... Looks like things haven't changed much over the millennia. The folks in England were always better off than the poor Farming folk in Wales. If you think about it 4 x 6d in Lizzies time was a lot of money. I doubt many down this end ever saw that much.

Anyway, great find Paul. (and I def.hate you now)  Grin

Two bob would have been 2 weeks wages for the average farm labourer.

well done - that's fantastic. Hopefully I'll be able to put up some images of a little purse hoard I found last year soon, so I know how you must feel Smiley

I've got a friend from uni who has a farm just north of junction 18 on the M4 - I'll just have to go and see him and ask for permission now Smiley

Farmer asked what it would have been worth back then, thanks for that Geoff Smiley Smiley
