Think we have found something of national importance through lack of knowledge about the artefact or the depth its come from...Two mates were at a rally in Lincs..Where a lad had called in the Arkies because he thought had found a ancient bronze vessel and with the area taped of the Arkies got stuck in ..To amazement of everybody watching they found a copper kettle Smiley
I remember in Yorkshire at a rally where two lads spent digging out a big circular iron hoop from a cartwheel ,thinking it was going be big Roman hoard..At least they had good laugh afterwards  Grin ..Mine was at rally in Oxford many years ago...When digging a deep hole ,near a tree on a river bank where many roman coins had been located...With a dozen other detectorists standing over me,but they shifted quick when i uncovered a latrine bucket with its contents intact...Had fill in that hole quick and found out that later that local scouts camped there...I was the brunt of weekend jokes on the campsite, but if you cant laugh at yourself it would be a poor world Grin Grin Grin

I remember at a 'Lost Villages Rally' years ago, getting a good signal over a very large area. I walked away without bothering to dig ( would I do that today- no!). The next day we heard that the field had been cordoned off after a detectorist had found what appeared to be a very large bomb. We took up a vantage point and watched the army guys up to their thighs in the hole exactly where I had the large signal the day before. It turned out that what the guy had found was a milk churn and he was the butt of a lot of jokes that day. I couldn't help thinking it could have been me. If I remember rightly he was part of a large Welsh contingement so perhaps someone on here may know who it was.

I remember on one occasion years ago calling on a farmer to show him a box of finds from off of his fields. I then departed to do some detecting there. Parked up on some grass land but realised I may be in the way of the gate opening. Went to move but was firmly stuck as the ground was wetter than I realised. As I was busying myself looking for material to put under the tyres the farmer's wife pulled up with my box of finds. I had driven off with them on the roof of the car. She then had to sit in the car as I pushed it out. A rather double embarrassment to say the least.

You should have put your box of finds under the tyres for traction Grin Grin

About four years ago at the Weekend Wanders rally a lad detecting next door to a field where a important female Saxon Burial was found the year before, thought he had located two deep hoards because of the number of interesting coins found in that location..When i got to the area the Arkies had brought in a J.C.B. and had uncovered two circular areas of stone ...Where a young local Arkie was talking to a camera crew  claiming these circular stone patches were probably post holes for a Roman Villa with hoards or offerings placed in them..But other detectorists could find no signals in the (post holes)...I suggested to the Arkie and T.V.crew that these be might post pads for a fine Saxon Hall and not a Roman Villa were greeted with sarcasm .I was proofed right when a saxon arefact was recovered and they redid the T.V. interview with Arkie now claiming now  it was a Saxon hall .........The following week i met the lad who found the pads and he was still embarassed that he thought the hot rocks were hoards...I said you should be proud .......Not every day you find a Saxon hall Grin
