You will miss things with both 2 and 4 tones, I have tested them on "iffy" signals on a few occasions and can guarantee it especially with targets close to iron.

My Philosophy is, if I dont get them this year, I'll get them next. I'm never that desperate for finds and dont usually dig any deeper than about 5 inches.

Detecting for me is as much being out in the countryside with its sights and sounds as it is for detecting.
Thats why I never wear headphones.
