I went out for a short while this afternoon, nothing very old but interesting bits.

The hinge has no holes for the screws and I think the key is possibly a "Barrel Tap" type.

thats definately a barrel tap key
the hinge with no holes have it got
little tabs on the back if so it could have
come off a LEATHER CASE  Smiley

Hi Botty
This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but a few years ago I worked at the George and Pilgrims hotel here in Glastonbury which is a 15 century hostelry, the hinge you have is very similar to one that was on one of the trap doors to the cellar, although the one there was square.

It is the part where the padlock fits and the pointed piece slides in to a similar shaped frame that just comes up around the sides, when it is slid in to the frame you can't see the screws and so can't undo them.
