Looking at it does look like a vessel leg, albeit a bit of a fancy one, thanks for the help guys.

I was going to say as well that for Carausius coins the legend (usually) is either IMP CARAVSIVS PF AVG or IMP C CARAVSIVS PF AVG - yours is the second type which is usually dated to after 289AD (the earlier coins are from 286-289AD), when things had settled down a bit.

In general 95% of Carausius' coins are of the PAX AVG type, so every other type combined only make up 5% of the coins found, although PROVID AVG and LAETIT(IA) AVG are some of the commoner of the remaining ones. The ones to look out for are the helmeted bust types with different obverse legends or the legionary series.

Anyway, nice coin though Smiley

UKDFD and FLO concur for once  Grin It is indeed a Roman vessel leg in the shape of a Griffin, circa 2nd - 4th century AD.
