I've been detecting for a year now without the use of a probe but realise that purchasing one is essential. Money is tight at the moment and I've noticed that there is quite a difference in price between the Teknetics , Bullseye and Garrett models. Why is this ? What (other than the prices) are the differences between the three ?

Garretts is a stronger bit of kit but is massively overpriced for what it is, it also has automatic tuning when turning on, all the others need to be balanced. As far as sensitivity goes they are all about the same but you don't want greater sensitivity or it won't work as a probe.
I had a Sherlock (about £20) for donkey's years and it did just the same job but is a bit of a drag having to tune it. Wink

simple answer is buy quality buy once Wink don't get dragged into the false economy of substandard equipment my self its garrett pro pointer not perfect but it does what it says on the package ( I have adapted mine ) by putting A piece of duct tape over the switch + speaker to stop water +sand entering them DOES NOT make it waterproof but as helped  Wink

While you're at it remember to save another £8 for a lanyard and attachment.  Worth every penny, it's an expensive bit of kit to leave at the side of the hole. Shocked

Have a look at this one.
