Interesting date that, think he was hiding over in Ireland at that point , lot of history behind that coin , what do you say Peter? Was it gun money at that date?

Very nice find Alan, yes Steve is correct it is James 11 Gunmoney, emergency coinage,if you turn your reverse image around so the date is at the top then you can just make out two XX's(3rd X is worn away) which will be the denomination,This will make it a Half Crown.

Bit of info on gun money
James 11 being catholic was very unpopular in Britain,In 1688 the British people offered the throne to james son-in-law William of Orange and his wife Mary to reign as joint sovereigns,James fled to France to raise an army, and in 1689 landed in Ireland to try and capture it and the invade mainland Britain.
All the gold and Silver James had was used to buy arms,so an emergency coinage was created, using metal from old cannons, bells, and other scrap, this became known as GUN MONEY,the idea being that it would be repayed in silver or gold at a later date when James regained the Crown,James was defeated by William at the Battle of the Boyne and the coinage was then more or less made worthless.
Hope this is of interest.
